Position Overview

Finance Manager
Location: Edmonton, AB

The Gear Centre Group of Companies is a conglomerate of well-established entities operating across Canada. We are seeking a Finance Manager to join our team in Edmonton, Alberta. This role reports directly to the CFO and encompasses responsibilities related to treasury operations, capital asset management, general accounting, and the preparation of month-end and year-end financial documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee treasury and cash management functions, including the preparation of financial projections, cash flow analysis, and quarterly bank reporting.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and other financial management reports.
  • Manage general accounting tasks such as journal entry preparation, intercompany transactions, and month-end/year-end closing activities.
  • Support the external audit process to ensure adherence to internal controls and compliance with relevant statutory requirements.
  • Monitor financial performance trends and communicate insights to senior management.
  • Guide and mentor property accounting staff and lead the evaluation and implementation of new ERP systems.

Accounting Policies and Procedures

  • Collaborate with the CFO and Controller to develop and refine accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with GAAP and corporate policies.
  • Advise operational managers on financial matters and accounting practices.
  • Establish and maintain reporting processes, preparing financial reports for management review.
  • Work with IT personnel to implement necessary changes to accounting systems.

Staff Development

  • Assist in onboarding new team members and provide ongoing support to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Participate in the hiring process, performance evaluations, and employee relations in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Oversee time management processes, including approval of timesheets and vacation requests.
  • Foster professional development among staff, setting individual goals and objectives.

Capital Asset Management

  • Manage the accounting for asset additions, disposals, and transfers.
  • Coordinate with operations to monitor assets under construction and ensure timely capitalization.
  • Prepare monthly amortization entries.

General Ledger Oversight

  • Review and approve journal entries related to treasury and property accounts.
  • Ensure subsidiary ledgers reconcile with the general ledger and address discrepancies as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Prepare necessary reports and statistics in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the President and CFO.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Accounting; CPA designation preferred.
  • At least 5 years of relevant mid-senior level accounting experience with supervisory duties.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and adaptable to various accounting software.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of corporate accounting and financial management practices.
  • Self-motivated with strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the capacity to prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
