Multi-Functional Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist
Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services
Location: Whistler, BC
The Multi-Functional Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks related to laboratory and radiographic testing procedures. This role includes evaluating and confirming laboratory results, conducting patient blood draws, ensuring quality control measures are met, engaging in quality assurance activities, and preparing relevant reports. Additionally, the technologist will handle equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as assist in the training of new staff members. Adherence to health and safety protocols and compliance with the Diagnostic Accreditation Program (DAP) is essential.
Key Responsibilities
The technologist will carry out daily operational tasks in both laboratory and x-ray settings as necessary.
Laboratory Duties:
- Operate hematology, coagulation, and chemistry workstations.
- Conduct daily quality control checks as required.
- Process patient samples and generate reports.
- Manage the receipt of blood components and products.
- Assign and distribute blood products including uncrossmatched red cells and plasma.
- Transport blood components and products securely.
- Oversee the quarantine and disposal of blood products.
- Reconstitute and pool purified plasma products.
X-Ray Duties:
- Maintain the film library effectively.
- Prepare imaging films for medical professionals by retrieving pertinent previous films and completing necessary documentation.
- Execute general x-ray procedures both in the department and at patient bedsides.
- Perform blood draws for both inpatients and outpatients.
- Document and monitor quality control for both internal and external processes.
- Handle clerical tasks including inventory management, daily statistics, and file maintenance.
- Participate in quality assurance programs.
- Conduct equipment maintenance and document all activities performed.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new employees, including conducting in-service training as needed.
- Provide on-call services as required.
- Uphold health and safety standards, promptly reporting any unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel.
Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology Program.
- Eligibility for registration with the relevant provincial licensing authority.
- Completion of the NAIT TRAM 101 Course, with a minimum of one year of recent relevant experience or equivalent education and training.

- Proven knowledge of laboratory procedures and technical skills necessary for testing.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to prioritize and manage workload effectively.
- Capability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Adaptability to work under pressure in a dynamic setting.
- Basic understanding of other healthcare disciplines and their roles in patient care.
- Proficiency in operating relevant equipment and software.
- Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
- Commitment to understanding and integrating legislative obligations and provincial commitments related to Indigenous rights and reconciliation.
