Job Summary

The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department at the City of Ottawa is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Instructor, Specialized Aquafitness to join our team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for teaching specialized aquafitness programming to participants in a safe and enjoyable manner, while following the guidelines of the certifying agency and in accordance with corporate and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach specialized aquafitness programming to participants in a safe and enjoyable manner
  • Follow the guidelines of the certifying agency and corporate and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines and standards
  • Develop and implement effective teaching methods and materials to engage participants and promote learning
  • Provide excellent customer service and ensure a positive experience for participants
  • Collaborate with other team members to achieve departmental goals and objectives
Requirements
  • Completion of Grade 11 and current
  • Certifications from a recognized certifying organization (or equivalent as deemed acceptable by management)
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience or equivalent apprenticeship
  • Aquafitness Instructor Specialty certification (CALA, YM-YWCA, WaterART or other recognized certification)
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
  • AODA Accessibility/IASR Training
  • Current National Lifeguard Pool certificate is an asset
  • Current Oxygen Therapy or LSS Airway Management certificate is an asset
Knowledge and Skills
  • Corporate and Departmental policies, guidelines and directives
  • City of Ottawa emergency response procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • Knowledge of specialty area, including but not limited to, demographic needs, goals and objectives and how to safely design and facilitate specialty fitness programs

  • Understanding of and ability to communicate using verbal and non-verbal cues
  • Offer alternatives and options to participants
  • Understand contraindications for specialty populations

  • Professional appearance and demeanor while on duty
  • Report to work in ample time to be ready at the start of their shift
  • Possess the physical capability to perform the ongoing duties of the position, including ability to demonstrate all movement patterns and facilitate an active fitness class
Language Requirement

Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions require French oral, reading and writing.

Police Record Check

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa's satisfaction.
