Position Overview:

Job Title: Analyst 1

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager

Department: Environmental

Employment Type: Full-Time Contract

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Focus on delivering high-quality, reliable analytical data in a safe and timely manner by adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures.
  2. Conduct analyses and intricate sample preparations with proficiency.
  3. Acquire comprehensive knowledge regarding analytical methods and associated quality control measures.

Key Duties:

  1. Examine LIMS summary reports to effectively plan and prioritize daily tasks.
  2. Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while performing the following:
    1. Prepare samples and conduct preliminary procedures prior to analysis.
    2. Execute basic testing protocols.
    3. Recognize non-standard samples and seek guidance for appropriate handling procedures.
  3. Prepare standards and reagents, ensuring adequate supplies through monitoring.
  4. Maintain a high level of precision in sample preparation and analysis.
  5. Operate and care for all necessary instruments and equipment to fulfill responsibilities.
  6. Identify and resolve issues in laboratory operations in accordance with SOP guidelines and ISO 17025 standards.
  7. Meet quality and turnaround time specifications required by clients, ensuring samples are processed within established timeframes.
  8. Document all known sample deviations and report them to the Supervisor.
  9. Utilize proper laboratory techniques to minimize risks of mislabeling, sample mix-ups, and cross-contamination.
  10. Contribute to corrective action procedures and communicate issues to the Supervisor.
  11. Provide updates to the Supervisor/Manager regarding workstation status, including potential delays.
  12. Engage in problem-solving across all laboratory areas.
  13. Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and general work instructions.
  14. Participate in the validation of new procedures and instruments as necessary.
  15. Continuously monitor laboratory operations to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
  16. Comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System, and Health & Safety protocols.
  17. Participate in lab and Health & Safety meetings when requested.
  18. Engage in internal and external audits as required.
  19. Provide mentorship and training to junior staff members.
  20. Maintain training records and relevant qualifications.
  21. Keep the work area organized and tidy.
  22. Fulfill any additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Post-secondary education or equivalent experience.
  2. Proven success in a Laboratory Technician role.
  3. Strong understanding of sample handling protocols to ensure sample integrity and compliance with quality assurance standards.
  4. Familiarity with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices for handling hazardous materials.
  5. Excellent manual dexterity, record-keeping, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and perform various tasks.
  7. Accurate adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and instructions.
  8. Detail-oriented with strong record-keeping abilities.
  9. Effective time management, communication, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  10. Proficient computer skills.
  11. Positive attitude with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  12. Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  13. Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  14. Quick learner.

Work Environment:

  1. High productivity levels in a dynamic laboratory setting, which may involve repetitive tasks requiring patience and perseverance.
  2. Flexible hours, including potential overtime and shift work.
  3. May require prolonged periods of standing.
  4. Involves some lifting and carrying (up to 40 lbs).
  5. Hazardous materials are handled following established safety protocols and using appropriate equipment.
