The System Design team collaborates closely with System Modeling and System Engineering to architect and develop the Lightspeed constellation's comprehensive system, addressing critical components such as end-to-end communication, resource allocation strategies, network entry protocols, management systems for network elements, service availability, EPFD compliance, coordination mechanisms, satellite payload power management, resource utilization efficiency, spectrum management, user terminal integration, and operational concepts. We are in search of a seasoned and highly proficient Satellite System Architect to contribute to our mission. In this capacity, you will be instrumental in the design and development of the Lightspeed constellation system.

Main Responsibilities
  • Engage with cross-functional teams to establish the Lightspeed system architecture, system requirements, and specifications for network elements (including satellites), ensuring alignment with project objectives and client needs. Utilize modeling capabilities from System Modeling to validate key operational concepts and collaborate with System Engineering to define and validate requirements.
  • Participate in the design and development of essential components such as end-to-end communication, resource allocation strategies, network entry protocols, management systems for network elements, service availability, EPFD compliance, coordination mechanisms, satellite payload power management, resource utilization efficiency, spectrum management, user terminal integration, and operational concepts.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers within the System Design team.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of the Lightspeed system architecture, detailing subsystems, interfaces, and data flows to ensure optimal system performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with the System Integration and Test team to strategize the integration and testing of all components of the Lightspeed constellation system.
  • Identify and manage technical risks associated with system design, developing mitigation strategies and contingency plans as necessary.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends in the satellite sector, contributing innovative ideas to the design and operation of the Lightspeed constellation system.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation as required.
  • Engage with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders as necessary to ensure project success.
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in satellite system architecture and design, with a minimum of 15 years in comparable roles.
  • In-depth knowledge of satellite communication protocols, orbital mechanics, and space systems.
  • Experience with software-defined satellite communication payloads.
  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies and standards within the space industry.

Equipment Used
  • Computers operating on Windows and Linux platforms.
Decision Making and Supervision
  • This role involves making recommendations and influencing the design of the Lightspeed system.
  • This position does not have direct reports.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP).
