POSITION OVERVIEW
The Social Centre serves as a vital hub for individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges, offering a supportive environment to foster connections, engage in wellness activities, and enhance overall well-being. This center is dedicated to creating a welcoming space for social interaction, support, and participation in various recreational and vocational pursuits. As a Community Support Worker, you will play a key role in facilitating participant engagement, leading workshops, and addressing the diverse needs of clients through integrated support services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Foster positive interactions with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use issues, and homelessness, employing a trauma-informed and harm reduction approach.
- Build rapport and advocate for a diverse clientele, including those actively using substances and facing significant health challenges.
- Design and implement engaging activities that promote life skills, recreation, and socialization, providing guidance and demonstrations as needed.
- Collaborate with coordinators to develop and enhance activity offerings, encouraging participant involvement.
- Monitor participant interactions and report any safety concerns or changes in behavior to supervisors.
- Utilize sound judgment and creativity to navigate unpredictable situations and emergencies effectively.
- Employ non-violent communication and de-escalation techniques to manage volatile behaviors, addressing participant feedback and concerns appropriately.
- Guide Activity Assistants and Peer Support Workers in their roles as necessary.
- Oversee meal preparation and planning for community dinners, including the preparation of snacks and beverages.
- Organize and set up spaces for activities, maintaining an inventory of necessary equipment and materials.
- Document participant engagement and maintain accurate records, including progress reports and activity statistics.
- Work collaboratively and ethically within a team, ensuring confidentiality and a focus on participant needs.
- Provide referrals to additional programs and resources as required.
- Perform general housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.
- Carry out other related responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Completion of a Social Services Diploma, Activity Assistant Program, or a related field.
- Possession of a Class V BC Driver's License.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Training in Naloxone administration.
- Current Criminal Record Check for working with Vulnerable Populations.
- Full COVID-19 Vaccination.
- Demonstrated physical, mental, and emotional capacity to fulfill job responsibilities.
- Minimum one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of contemporary social issues related to homelessness, mental health, and substance misuse.
- Familiarity with harm reduction and psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
- Ability to engage in various arts, crafts, and recreational activities.
- Knowledge of community resources and support services.
