The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a part-time Addiction Medicine Specialist to join our team at the Yarmouth Recovery Support Centre. As a key member of our inter-professional clinical team, you will provide evidence-informed withdrawal management and related mental health and addiction care in an outpatient setting.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, emergency department physicians, community pharmacists, and acute care inpatient physicians to recognize and manage substance use disorders. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide telephone consultative support and work in a dynamic, patient-centered environment.
Responsibilities- Assess and manage substance use disorders, including initiation and monitoring of withdrawal management protocols
- Work with the clinical team to develop and implement care and discharge plans in collaboration with clients, families, and healthcare providers
- Conduct risk assessments and interventions for suicide, self-harm, or harm to others
- Provide trauma-informed and culturally safe care, including brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders
- Maintain timely, clear, and accurate health records in adherence to Nova Scotia Health documentation policies
- Current medical license issued by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
- Current certification in addiction medicine through one of the following professional organizations: College of Family Physicians Canada (CFPC) Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) for Addiction Medicine (AM), American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) certification, or International Society of Addiction Medicine (iSAM) certification
- Active credentials and privileges with NSHA
- Liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
- Clinical experience in practicing addiction medicine
- Experience working in a medical withdrawal management service
