Job Summary:
We are seeking a qualified Indigenous Language Teacher to join our team at School District #63 (Saanich). The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching SENCOTEN language and culture to students in our district.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach SENCOTEN language and culture to students in a safe and nurturing learning environment
- Develop and implement curriculum that meets the needs of our Indigenous students
- Work collaboratively with school and district teams to support Indigenous language and culture programs
- Provide language and cultural support to students, staff, and parents/guardians
- Develop connections and partnerships with Indigenous communities to raise cultural awareness in school
Qualifications:
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate or First Nations Language Teaching Certificate
- Demonstrated language proficiency in SENCOTEN
- Language teacher training an asset
- Knowledge of local Saanich Indigenous communities
- Significant leadership experience, preferably in relation to developing and enhancing Indigenous communities and cultural awareness
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated successful experience acting as a role model for and working with Indigenous students supporting them in language development and fluency
- Strong organizational and classroom management skills
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of school and district teams
- Effective communication skills, demonstrated through positive relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians and the community
