Job Posting: Indigenous Language Teacher

Job Summary:

We are seeking a qualified Indigenous Language Teacher to join our team at School District #63 (Saanich). The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching SENCOTEN language and culture to students in our district.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach SENCOTEN language and culture to students in a safe and nurturing learning environment
  • Develop and implement curriculum that meets the needs of our Indigenous students
  • Work collaboratively with school and district teams to support Indigenous language and culture programs
  • Provide language and cultural support to students, staff, and parents/guardians
  • Develop connections and partnerships with Indigenous communities to raise cultural awareness in school

Qualifications:

  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate or First Nations Language Teaching Certificate
  • Demonstrated language proficiency in SENCOTEN
  • Language teacher training an asset
  • Knowledge of local Saanich Indigenous communities
  • Significant leadership experience, preferably in relation to developing and enhancing Indigenous communities and cultural awareness

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated successful experience acting as a role model for and working with Indigenous students supporting them in language development and fluency
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of school and district teams
  • Effective communication skills, demonstrated through positive relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians and the community
