Job Title: Court Liaison Officer

Job Summary:

The Court Liaison Officer is a critical role that serves as the liaison between the RCMP, Provincial and Federal Crown Counsel, and other stakeholders in the Criminal Justice System. This position is responsible for ensuring the quality assurance of reports to Crown Counsel, ensuring timely attendance of prisoners in court, and providing training and development to RCMP cadets and members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Liaise with RCMP Senior Management Team and Crown Counsel to review and develop policies and procedures.
  • Attend regular court user meetings with Senior Judges, Crown Counsel, Court Services, Corrections, Sheriffs, and Defence Counsel to discuss and develop policies and resolve issues.
  • Ensure the timely attendance of prisoners in court by liaising with City cells, Sheriffs, and Crown Counsel.
  • Review reports to Crown Counsel submitted by RCMP members to ensure legality, accuracy, and promptness.
  • Maintain a diary date system to ensure all court files are reviewed once submitted to Crown Counsel.
  • Ensure dispositions are completed, fingerprints are forwarded to Ottawa for registration of criminal convictions, and CPIC entries are valid.
  • Create and maintain training packages for RCMP cadets and instruct them on local Detachment and Crown Counsel policies and procedures.
Requirements:
  • Law enforcement background and/or extensive experience in a policing environment.
  • Sound knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Federal, Provincial, and Municipal Statutes, and maintains currency on case law.
  • Operational experience in JUSTIN (Provincial records management system shared by Courts, Police, and Crown Counsel), PIRS (Police Information Retrieval System), PRIME (Police Records Information Management Environment), CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre), OSR (Operation Statistical Reporting), and UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting).
  • Ability to concentrate on complex files with frequent interruptions and work in an adversarial climate with both internal and external clients.
  • Must obtain and maintain a RCMP security clearance and BC Provincial Special Constable Appointment.
