Position Overview

This role presents an exciting opportunity to collaborate closely with internal stakeholders across BC Hydro to identify their IT business needs and prioritize technology investments. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and enhancing IT systems and processes with a current emphasis on the following business areas (subject to change):

  • Plan: Asset Planning, Dam Safety, Energy Planning, Engineering
  • Build: Project Delivery, Indigenous Relations, Environment
  • Operate: Generation System Operations, Stations Field Operations, Site C

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Business Solutions & Services, the successful candidate will:

  • Deliver IT Services by comprehending the specific business context, operational requirements, and objectives of the departments within the portfolio, identifying, justifying, prioritizing (at both the business and enterprise levels), and initiating the delivery of IT capabilities to fulfill business needs;
  • Champion the business, drive change, and encourage the adoption of standardized IT business solutions throughout the organization;
  • Promote IT opportunities, process enhancements, standards, and constraints by fostering a shared understanding with the business;
  • Serve as a Technology Asset Owner for the applications and infrastructure managed/supported by Business Solutions & Services;
  • Facilitate enterprise business process improvements across their Key Business Units;
  • Represent the business and assist in the development and annual refresh of the BC Hydro Technology Strategy and 5-Year Plan;
  • Lead a team of IT professionals, union employees, and contractors to ensure effective delivery of technology services, ensuring staff are optimally deployed to resolve issues and identify solutions;
  • Oversee and ensure that relationship management practices align with enterprise standards for their accounts across organizational units; establish dashboards and KPIs, and identify key focus areas for their respective business accounts;
  • Maintain high standards of communication within the company, within Technology, and with stakeholder groups, regulators, and industry peers.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in business process improvement, change management, project management, strategic thinking, and analytical skills typically acquired through a university degree in Commerce, Finance, Economics, Information Technology, or equivalent. Progress towards or completion of an MBA will be viewed favorably.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of demonstrated experience, including:
  • Financial management, policy and strategy development responsibilities involving large teams and budgets.
  • Leading a diverse and engaged team to address complex technology challenges.
  • Managing application maintenance/sustainment teams and ensuring the operational integrity of enterprise-wide technology systems.
  • Understanding the broader context in a complex and fast-paced business environment and effectively aligning priorities with corporate strategic goals.
  • Gathering business requirements from stakeholders to envision and implement IT solutions that tackle business challenges and opportunities.
  • Building and nurturing relationships with internal stakeholders, executives, and a variety of technical teams and specialists.
  • Knowledge or basic certification in ITIL will also be considered an asset.
  • Experience in a large corporation, utility, or public sector will be regarded as advantageous.
  • Demonstrated business acumen, including an understanding of business needs and the role of Technology within an organization.
  • A working knowledge of standard IT tools and technologies as well as engineering applications (e.g., Esri, Autodesk).
  • Advanced knowledge of innovative business operations management practices.
  • Strong understanding of both technology and business perspectives to assist technical and non-technical stakeholders in developing a shared understanding of the technology, functional, and process changes necessary to deliver a highly usable and effective solution.
  • Knowledge of business process analysis, project management, vendor management, and problem-solving and decision-making methodologies.
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture principles, software development lifecycles (SDLC), Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), and IT project management methodologies, processes, and tools in a utility or industrial/operational environment.
  • Ability to discuss, analyze, and provide professional IT services advice.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions, negotiate, influence multiple stakeholders, and build consensus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders in writing (briefings, presentations) and verbally, adapting communications to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to adapt to change and drive efficiencies, fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Well-developed planning and organizational skills.
  • Class 5 Drivers Licence.

Additional Information

  • This role is based out of the Edmonds office. There may be some travel between our Dunsmuir (Vancouver) and Edmonds (Burnaby) locations.
  • There may also be limited travel to our Site C location.
  • This position is classified as a Manager, Business Support Services at BC Hydro.
