Position Overview
The Parks Department is seeking two full-time Arboriculture Specialists. This role involves skilled manual labor focused on tree hazard mitigation through the pruning and removal of trees within the District.
Work is conducted following established safety protocols, with a strong emphasis on the safety of all personnel and the public.
The Arboriculture Specialist will be responsible for climbing, pruning, removing, and chipping various coniferous and deciduous trees using ropes, safety harnesses, power saws, and other tools.
Key responsibilities include:
- Executing tree cutting and removal using appropriate rigging and winching techniques.
- Performing heavy manual tasks related to tree maintenance.
- Planting, staking, fertilizing, and mulching trees, while also reporting hazardous conditions and pest issues.
- Operating vehicles and chippers to transport materials to and from work sites.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A thorough understanding of the methods, tools, and equipment used in tree pruning and removal.
- Significant knowledge of safety procedures and equipment involved in arboriculture.
- Ability to perform climbing techniques safely at considerable heights.
- Proficiency in using rigging ropes and associated hardware.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to follow and give directions effectively.
- Commitment to safety practices in all work activities.
- Expertise in operating hand and power tools used in tree care.
- Excellent communication skills for interactions with colleagues and the public.
- Knowledge of native and non-native tree species.
- Willingness to respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
Completion of high school education, supplemented by post-secondary courses in arboriculture or urban forestry, along with relevant experience, is required. Certifications such as OFA Level 1, chainsaw operation, ISA certification, and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License are advantageous.
CompensationThis full-time position offers a competitive hourly wage based on a standard 40-hour work week.
