Unit Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Medical Physics, the Biomedical Equipment Specialists in the Medical Physics Department are responsible for the routine upkeep and repair of radiation therapy apparatus. This includes linear accelerators, computed tomography (CT) scanners, x-ray machines, and their associated subsystems. The position involves a wide array of technical disciplines such as electronics, soldering and component-level repairs, high voltage systems, robotics, mechanical systems, plumbing, computer hardware/software, networking, radiation safety, and diagnostic imaging.

Position Overview

The Medical Physics Department offers scientific and technical assistance for the Radiation Treatment Program. Responsibilities include maintenance of treatment and imaging devices, quality assurance, design and fabrication of specialized therapeutic devices, dose measurement and calculation, radiation safety protocols, and the advancement of innovative radiation treatment methodologies. The department also engages in educational programs at various academic levels and conducts research on new cancer diagnosis and treatment techniques.

Work Schedule

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with occasional requirements for holiday and weekend work.

Qualifications

  1. Completion of an accredited post-secondary program in Electronics Engineering Technology.
  2. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
  3. Experience with linear accelerators and diagnostic imaging x-ray machines is advantageous.
  4. Understanding of safety regulations related to radiation-generating equipment is beneficial.
  5. Familiarity with complex systems, including control systems, servo-electronics, high-voltage, vacuum, and microwave technologies.
  6. Proven ability to troubleshoot electronic and electrical system failures effectively.
  7. Demonstrated high-quality workmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
  8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Exhibited initiative, innovation, and creative problem-solving abilities.
  10. Able to work extended hours and weekends on short notice when required.

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
