Job Description

Job Summary:

The York Region District School Board is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Teacher Counsellor to join our team in a continuing education role. As a Teacher Counsellor, you will provide guidance and support to students, teachers, and parents to promote academic success and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group counselling to students, addressing academic, social, and emotional concerns.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behaviour intervention plans.
  • Conduct assessments and screenings to identify student needs and develop strategies to support student success.
  • Develop and implement programs to promote social-emotional learning, mental health, and well-being.
  • Provide consultation and support to teachers and other school staff on issues related to student behaviour, mental health, and academic success.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community agencies and organizations to access resources and support for students and families.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in teaching and counselling.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Counselling Psychology or Special Education.
  • Teaching certification and experience in a public K-12 school setting.
  • Knowledge of the Ministry of Education's current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures.
  • Experience in developing and implementing IEPs and behaviour intervention plans.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and community agencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students with diverse needs and abilities.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and restorative justice.
  • Experience in developing and implementing social-emotional learning programs.
  • Knowledge of the First Peoples Principles of Learning.
