About the Role:
We are seeking a skilled Paving Equipment Operator to join our team at McNally Contractors. As a Paving Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating various types of heavy equipment, including pavers, rollers, and skid-steer loaders, to lay asphalt and concrete for roads, parking lots, and other surfaces.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate pavers and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner to ensure high-quality results.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Preheat paving screeds and monitor temperature settings of asphalt mixtures to achieve the desired consistency.
- Line pavers accurately to ensure proper application of asphalt and achieve the desired thickness and width.
- Regulate temperature of asphalt flowing from the hopper to achieve the optimal consistency.
- Observe and control the distribution of asphalt mix to ensure uniformity and achieve the specified compacted mat thickness and cross-section.
- Ensure proper depth application of asphalt on the screed using manual and automatic grade controls.
- Safely operate rollers in successive overlapping passes to compact and smooth surfaces.
- Determine speed and direction of machine based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures.
- Operate skid-steer loaders to assist with various tasks on the paving job site, including material handling, grading, and site preparation.
Working Environment/Conditions:
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which may include inclement weather, heat, and humidity.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs on a regular basis.
- Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
- Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
Qualifications & Experience:
- High school or equivalent with experience in related construction activities.
- Class 5 license with a clean abstract.
- Demonstrate a proficient understanding of asphalt and raking techniques.
- Knowledge of paving construction methods, asphalt and road construction materials, heavy equipment operation, and industry requirements.
