Position Overview
- We are looking for a Senior Underwriting Specialist to enhance our Underwriting team.
- This role is part of a unionized environment and offers competitive hourly compensation with regular wage increases as per the Collective Agreement.
Role Summary
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Manager, Underwriting, the Senior Underwriting Specialist will evaluate new business opportunities, renewal requests, and contract modifications for potential and existing clients that meet established Level 3 criteria. This includes assessing eligibility and risks based on various underwriting factors, determining declines, calculating rates, and preparing necessary documentation for proposals and renewals.
Key Responsibilities
Client Engagement and Service: New Business
- Analyze new business opportunities to determine eligibility and risk levels, considering factors such as industry type, years in operation, existing benefits, and demographic details.
- Identify reasons for declining opportunities and manage large case quotes effectively.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to gather necessary information and assess risk.
- Calculate rates based on thorough analysis and develop strategies for complex groups.
- Participate in inter-departmental reviews for new business opportunities involving large groups.
- Respond to inquiries regarding underwriting products and services.
- Prepare and distribute proposal and financial documents to relevant stakeholders.
Client Engagement and Service: Group Renewals
- Review renewal requests and assess risk, determining appropriate renewal rates based on claims experience and other influencing factors.
- Identify upselling opportunities and manage large case renewals as projects.
- Generate renewal packages with all necessary documentation for processing.
Team Collaboration and Support
- Consult with other underwriters on decisions within Level 3 authority limits and conduct peer reviews.
- Identify and recommend improvements to underwriting processes and tools.
- Maintain current knowledge of underwriting practices and participate in continuous learning initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant group underwriting experience, including at least 2 years in a Level 2 or equivalent role.
- Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as business, finance, or mathematics.
- CEBS designation or equivalent professional development.
- Proficiency in advanced Excel and intermediate Word.
