Assistant Store Manager

In collaboration with the branch manager, the assistant store manager plays a crucial role in overseeing and motivating staff, ensuring efficient store operations, lumber yard management, and delivery services, while enhancing customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership (store, yard, delivery)

  • Serve as a model for the organization's core values;
  • Facilitate effective communication within the team: ensure the understanding and adherence to company policies (financial, HR, etc.);
  • Set clear expectations, communicate them to team members, and monitor progress;
  • Work alongside the branch manager to define work objectives and priorities and track outcomes;
  • Oversee daily performance: provide constructive feedback and address any issues;
  • Assist in the recruitment of new team members;
  • Organize team and individual meetings;
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations;
  • Authorize leave requests and manage absences;
  • Ensure proper training and development of team members. Identify and prepare successors for key roles;
  • Collaborate closely with the HR department to enhance workplace relationships.

Operational Oversight

  • Coordinate branch activities based on operational needs;
  • Maintain strict management of inventory, turnover, and losses;
  • Implement merchandising guidelines and uphold corporate branding;
  • Conduct thorough checks on various operational documents and reports;
  • Adhere to the branch's budget for staffing and equipment, adjusting as necessary based on sales fluctuations;
  • Initiate continuous improvement strategies focusing on service quality, operational efficiency, and cost compliance;
  • Ensure adherence to operational protocols (accuracy in customer orders, receipt of goods, returns, etc.);

Customer Service Excellence

  • Foster collaboration between the store, yard, and delivery teams;
  • Proactively engage with other departments to resolve issues;
  • Lead and organize operations to effectively meet the needs of customers and contractors;
  • Manage work schedules to ensure outstanding service delivery;
  • Guarantee prompt service for all customers;
  • Ensure safe and accessible conditions for individuals in the yard;
  • Conduct thorough checks on vehicles before departure;
  • Accurately manage invoices and credit documentation.

Health and Safety Compliance

  • Assist in identifying health and safety risks and contribute to developing solutions;
  • Encourage employees to adopt safe work practices and report any concerns to HR;
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety regulations;
  • Complete necessary reports and manage documentation in the event of workplace incidents;
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the work environment.

Receiving Goods

  • Schedule stock receptions and plan material placement in the lumber yard;
  • Verify that all items on purchase orders match delivered materials. Confirm quantities;
  • Assess product quality and take appropriate actions in case of deficiencies;
  • Oversee the unloading of supplier vehicles and ensure proper stock rotation;
  • Identify and locate all packages and merchandise;
  • Provide all necessary documentation to the receiving department.

Order Fulfillment

  • Collaborate with the dispatcher to prioritize orders and assign tasks to team members;
  • Verify delivery orders for accuracy in quantities, quality, and correct materials;
  • Load vehicles with prepared orders according to designated routes, ensuring proper distribution and load balance;

Material Management, Facility Maintenance & Loss Prevention

  • Conduct morning inspections of the yard and periodic checks throughout the day to identify areas needing attention;
  • Ensure clear and accessible aisles;
  • Prevent inventory loss by maintaining organized workspaces and strict controls;
  • Work with procurement and branch management to ensure effective inventory oversight;
  • Coordinate with other branches for prioritized transfers;
  • Ensure daily inspections of forklifts and trucks are conducted;
  • Contact the fleet manager for any necessary repairs and follow through on vehicle maintenance.

Qualifications

Educational Background

  • Degree in Management;
  • 5 to 7 years of management experience, preferably in retail;
  • Proficiency in Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel);
  • Familiarity with hardware and/or lumberyard operations is an asset;
  • Knowledge of OGC systems is a plus.
