About the OpportunityThe Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining Nova Scotia's extensive network of roads, bridges, and ferries. Our Fleet Services Division plays a crucial role in ensuring the operational safety of this infrastructure.
We are seeking a dedicated Truck and Transport Mechanic Apprentice to enhance their skills through practical experience, comprehensive training, and mentorship.
Role ResponsibilitiesAs an Apprentice, you will gain valuable experience working in various repair facilities within the region. You will be involved in servicing machinery and equipment utilized for snow and ice management, as well as conducting repairs and maintenance for the provincial road system.
Key DutiesUnder the guidance of the Fleet Service Coordinator and/or a certified mechanic, your responsibilities will include:
- Identifying equipment malfunctions
- Repairing machinery such as excavators, snow plows, graders, tandem trucks, and loaders
- Assisting with our preventative maintenance initiatives
Additionally, you will have the chance to work with various electronic systems and perform computer diagnostics.
QualificationsTo be considered for this position, you must have successfully completed a recognized Truck and Transport Repair program.
The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-driven, and a collaborative team member. Strong communication skills and professionalism are essential.
Ability to multitask, solve problems effectively, and make informed decisions in dynamic environments is highly valued.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in trades related to heavy trucks and equipment operation
- Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety standards
- First Aid and WHMIS certification

Work EnvironmentThis position involves working in a mechanical repair setting, which may include exposure to noise, smoke, and gas fumes, as well as varying weather conditions while performing fieldwork. The role requires considerable physical activity, including standing, lifting, and moving around both indoors and outdoors.
Additional InformationThere is one opportunity available in Antigonish, covering the Fleet Services area across multiple zones.
Apprentices are expected to provide their own tools, while personal protective equipment and larger tools will be supplied.
Candidates should include verification of current apprentice hours with their application, as this will determine the hourly wage.
