About the Role:
The Tailings and Mine Waste Management Practice group at Hatch is looking for an intermediate-level Geotechnical Engineer specializing in Tailings to join our expanding Geotechnical Discipline in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This position is ideal for a driven professional with a strong technical background, eager to support the growth of our practice and enhance the capabilities within our Canadian team of specialists in tailings and mine waste management, which includes geotechnical, hydrotechnical, mining, geoscientists, and process engineers worldwide. You will report to the Global Practice Leader in Tailings & Mine Waste Management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist engineers in executing projects that involve geotechnical tasks: site investigations, dam foundation design and construction, slope stabilization, and drainage design and construction.
- Develop geotechnical investigation strategies and support project engineers.
- Contribute to the preparation of geotechnical studies and engineering documentation.
- Evaluate slope stability under both static and seismic conditions.
- Predict water table levels in tailings storage facilities utilizing various tailings technologies.
- Collaborate with the project team to analyze geotechnical models of tailings storage facilities.
- Address geotechnical challenges such as settlements, liquefaction potential, slope stabilization, pore pressure generation, excavation, and backfilling procedures.
- Oversee field operations, including monitoring boreholes, in situ tests, piezocone soundings, reconnaissance trenches, and various construction activities related to tailings storage.
- Conduct limit equilibrium analyses under diverse loading scenarios.
- Assist the project team in developing deformation analyses for static and seismic loads.
- Support intermediate and senior engineers in data analysis and report generation.
- Be open to undertaking additional responsibilities as part of your role within the team.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's or advanced degree(s) in Civil, Geotechnical, Geological, or Mining Engineering from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a related position.
- Field experience in construction quality assurance, drilling, or oversight of operational activities is advantageous.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively in an international team with a strong client focus.
- Proficient in GeoStudio software, with advanced skills in Excel; familiarity with programming in Python or Visual Basic is a plus.
- Willingness to travel internationally.
- A valid passport with international recognition and a valid driver's license.
