Taxation Specialist

A Taxation Specialist will be instrumental in providing exceptional client services to a diverse range of clients while fostering the growth and development of our skilled team. The CPA-Tax is expected to maintain ethical standards and act with professionalism. By building strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and partners, the CPA-Tax will consistently deliver high-quality services in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), relevant legislation, and Firm Standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary degree or certificate in business or management
- CPA designation with a strong focus on taxation, including active participation in Tax Group meetings
- Completion or intention to enroll in the In-Depth Tax Course in the upcoming performance cycle (not applicable for rotational tax roles)
- Proficiency in MS Office and accounting software

Main Responsibilities
The CPA-Tax will deliver taxation advisory and related services to both public and private clients across various industry sectors.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Tax Services
- Plan and execute engagements primarily focused on compliance
- Collaborate with partners and tax managers on corporate restructuring and planning projects
- Ensure timely completion of tax compliance obligations (may include federal, provincial, and international filings as necessary)
- Engage with tax authorities and agencies
- Assist clients during audits conducted by tax agencies and follow up on audit outcomes
- Participate in estate planning for clients, including wills, insurance, and trusts
- Support the tax technician team through training, review, and oversight of tax-related tasks
- Prepare tax returns to ensure completeness and submit to managers and partners
- Report and discuss any issues with partners and managers that may impact engagement outcomes
- Stay informed on the Income Tax Act and relevant tax materials to maintain current knowledge
- Conduct client consultations to gather necessary information for file completion
- Organize and compile client materials
- Research client businesses, compile data, and prepare documentation for partner review
- Create and implement engagement plans, ensuring budgets and procedures are adhered to
- Justify timelines and budget discrepancies as needed
- Address all review notes promptly and ensure they are comprehensive
- Follow up on outstanding issues related to tax projects
- Act as a line manager for CPA students
- Review tax working papers prepared by junior staff
- Prepare working papers not assigned to junior staff
- Provide regular updates on project progress and billing to partners/managers
- Continuously update practice standards, ensuring budgets are accurate and deadlines are met
- Prepare and review complex personal and corporate income tax returns
- Offer business and tax advice to clients
- Assist clients with wealth management, financial advice, tax audits, and property investments
- Proactively plan for progression through the In-Depth Tax course
- Develop and deliver in-house tax professional development as required
- Continuously enhance professional knowledge and skills to improve individual and team performance
CPA Student Management
- Exemplify the values of the CPA profession
- Supervise tax assignments of CPA students directly
- Ensure students receive all necessary information for tax projects during their training
- Review student work in tax areas throughout the articling period
Additional Duties
- Stay updated on professional standards to ensure compliance
- Attend relevant seminars and conferences
- Continuously work on improving written and verbal communication skills
- Perform other accounting-related tasks as required
- Represent the firm positively in community engagements and events
