Position Overview: Trading Analyst

OMERS Capital Markets oversees a diverse public markets investment portfolio, including fixed income assets such as government bonds, Inflation-Linked Bonds, and both public and private credit, as well as equities. Our focus is on generating current income from high-quality assets while achieving consistent capital returns with lower volatility compared to broader markets. We strive to develop strategic partnerships with top-tier investors to access credit and other global opportunities. The OMERS Capital Markets team is distinguished by its diverse expertise and commitment to reliable, lower-risk performance, aiming to construct a well-diversified portfolio that delivers long-term annualized returns in the 6 to 9% range.

Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of Trading, the Trading Analyst role offers a unique opportunity to participate in a 2-year rotational program within the centralized trading team at one of Canada's largest pension plans. Upon completion, the program will lead to a trader position on the desk where a need has been identified. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with senior traders to enhance our execution capabilities. Execution will occur through electronic platforms and/or voice execution for various portfolios managed by both domestic and international portfolio managers. The ideal candidate will demonstrate passion, independence, and a results-oriented mindset while progressing into a more senior role.

The trading desk is tasked with providing valuable market insights to aid in portfolio positioning and management of execution costs. The candidate will be expected to work in the office.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting the implementation of trading process enhancements, including trading practices, portfolio analysis, and performance reporting.
  • Executing trades across a range of products and asset classes.
  • Assisting with specific projects aimed at improving trade execution.
  • Establishing connections with trading counterparties.
  • Understanding and implementing 'best execution' practices.
  • Developing decision-making skills by monitoring market dynamics, trading conditions, and price movements for improved execution.
  • Participating in weekly trading meetings.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, or finance preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in capital markets.
  • Programming skills in VBA, Python, or SQL are advantageous.
  • Progress towards completion of the CFA designation is desirable.
  • Familiarity with order management systems (OMS) and execution management systems (EMS).
  • Team player with initiative, drive, and the ability to thrive in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Strong learning agility with attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to build relationships internally and externally.

Challenges and Opportunities:

  • The role requires making real-time business decisions, necessitating the ability to prioritize multiple tasks while balancing accuracy and practical decision-making in fast-changing market conditions.
  • The role encompasses local and international clients; conference calls across time zones may occasionally be required.
  • To achieve optimal execution for trades, some solutions may not be readily available in the market, requiring initiative to find appropriate resolutions.
  • The trading desk covers all geographies; trading Asian markets in the evening may occasionally be necessary to provide backup coverage.
