Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Addiction Clinic Nurse at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

This role requires a Registered Nurse OR Registered Psychiatric Nurse to provide essential services within a multidisciplinary team focused on supporting individuals facing substance use challenges.

Responsibilities of the Addiction Clinic Nurse include:

Delivering comprehensive health care in a collaborative clinic environment to clients experiencing various acute and chronic health conditions, including mental health and substance use disorders. Offering compassionate counseling and care to individuals utilizing substances, particularly those in need of withdrawal management, stabilization, or transitioning to further treatment services. Developing and coordinating individualized care plans to facilitate transitions between different health services. Collaborating with a diverse team of health professionals and educational resources to ensure high-quality, client-centered care. Implementing harm reduction strategies to perform thorough physical and mental health evaluations, identifying challenges, and adjusting care plans in partnership with the interdisciplinary team. Engaging in direct care activities, including assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation of client care, while fostering therapeutic relationships based on mutual respect.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

Current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). A minimum of two (2) years of recent clinical nursing experience in providing care to clients within a harm reduction framework, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills & Competencies

In-depth knowledge of the BCCNM Professional and Practice standards for nursing. Understanding of community health nursing principles and practices with a focus on client and family-centered care. Ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment. Awareness of how social determinants of health impact individuals and communities. Experience in delivering culturally safe and competent care. Knowledge of the effects of colonization on individuals and communities. Capacity to work collaboratively with community partners, including organizations and individuals who use substances. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to build rapport with clients and stakeholders. Proficiency in conducting mental health assessments and evaluating suicide risk. Familiarity with Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, and Recovery-Oriented practices. Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and supportive counseling methods. Understanding of mental health disorders and treatment options. Knowledge of psychopharmacology and substance use treatment resources. Ability to coordinate care, provide counseling, and facilitate crisis interventions. Skills in mediation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving. Capability to work independently and as part of a team. Leadership skills to guide and support the designated client population. Competence in performing emergency procedures, including overdose response and CPR. Proficiency in using relevant equipment and software applications. Physical capability to fulfill the duties of the position.
