Position Overview

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as an Addiction Nurse

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse to become a vital part of the Vancouver Detox team. This role is integral to providing care in a supportive environment.

Vancouver Detox Centre Overview

The Vancouver Detox Centre (VDC) operates as an inpatient medical withdrawal management program, offering 24-hour nursing support. The facility provides withdrawal management services that incorporate pharmacological treatments, psychosocial interventions, and low-barrier group activities, including yoga and acupuncture. Cultural services such as Talking Circles and spiritual care are also available, ensuring a holistic approach to client care. The team comprises a diverse group of professionals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and detox specialists.

Responsibilities of the Addiction Nurse include:

Delivering direct nursing care and supportive counseling to clients undergoing detoxification and stabilization, while maintaining a secure environment for both clients and staff. Collaborating with interdisciplinary team members and health professionals from various sectors to ensure excellence in client-centered care and education.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

Active registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). A minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in providing treatment services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use issues, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle for work-related tasks.

Knowledge & Skills

Understanding of recovery principles and trauma-informed care. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client/family-centered care model. Familiarity with BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice. Insight into substance use issues and a non-judgmental approach to supporting clients through their recovery journey. Demonstrated knowledge of harm reduction strategies, assessment, intervention techniques, and evidence-based pharmacological approaches to treatment. Awareness of community resources and services available for clients facing substance use challenges. Proficiency in behavior management and the ability to apply non-violent crisis intervention strategies effectively. Understanding of the impact of colonization on Indigenous populations. Skills in facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution, along with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Competence in CPR techniques. Experience in case management, teaching, clinical support, and consultation. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team setting. Capacity to prioritize tasks, work independently, and adopt a cooperative approach to service delivery. Familiarity with relevant equipment and software applications. Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Work hours, including days off and work areas, may vary based on operational needs. Successful candidates may need to undergo a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per current Public Health Orders, all employees of Vancouver Coastal Health are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received a single dose of the most recent updated vaccine. Proof of vaccination status will be necessary.
