About the Role

The City of Vancouver is seeking a highly skilled Social Planner II to join our Planning, Urban Design & Sustainability team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in advancing our Reconciliation and Culture Change strategies, working closely with Indigenous communities, urban Indigenous peoples, and equity-denied groups.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage work plans, staff training programs, and cultural safety initiatives to promote reconciliation and equity in our planning processes.
  • Coach and support staff to work in accordance with our Reconciliation and Equity commitments, ensuring that our policies and practices reflect the principles of UNDRIP.
  • Research and formulate strategies, policies, and methodologies to advance reconciliation and equity in land use planning, urban design, and sustainability.
  • Build relationships with Indigenous communities, urban Indigenous peoples, and equity-denied groups to foster collaboration and mutual understanding.
  • Integrate UNDRIP Calls to Action into our land use policies, plans, designs, and regulations, ensuring that our work reflects the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples.
  • Manage consultancies and project budgets, ensuring that our work is delivered on time and within budget.
  • Develop and present complex reports and presentations to City Council, staff, and the public, communicating our work and its impact effectively.
  • Design and facilitate community events, workshops, and meetings to engage with stakeholders and build relationships.
  • Exercise sound judgment and professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
  • Analyze data and information to inform our work, identifying opportunities to improve our policies and practices.
  • Provide advice and guidance to staff and other departments on matters related to reconciliation and culture change strategies and policies.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary degree in public policy, Indigenous relations, planning, or a related field, preferably at the Master's level.
  • Extensive experience working with Indigenous communities, preferably with local host First Nations and urban Indigenous peoples.
  • Experience in rezoning or development planning is an asset.
