Join our team at the City of Vancouver, a leader in sustainability, reconciliation, and equity, as we strive to create a more inclusive and vibrant community.

About the Role

The Social Planner II plays a key role in our Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability department, working closely with Indigenous communities, urban Indigenous peoples, and equity-denied groups to develop policies, plans, and actions that promote reconciliation and equity.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage work plans, staff training, and cultural safety programs to promote reconciliation and equity.
  • Coach staff to work in accordance with the Vancouver Plan commitments to reconciliation and equity.
  • Research and formulate strategies, policies, and methodologies aligned with reconciliation and equity principles.
  • Build relationships between PDS, Indigenous communities, and urban Indigenous peoples.
  • Integrate UNDRIP Calls to Action into land use policies, plans, designs, and regulations.
  • Manage consultancies and project budgets.
  • Write reports, including complex Council reports.
  • Present complex material to staff, the public, and City Council.
  • Design and facilitate community events, including forums, workshops, and meetings.
  • Exercise judgment and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Analyze data to inform policy and planning decisions.
  • Provide information and advice to the public and other departments.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary degree in public policy, Indigenous relations, planning, or a related field.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, preferably with local host First Nations.
  • Experience in rezoning or development planning is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of public policy, Indigenous Relations, and planning.
  • Ability to develop and implement engagement processes with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues effectively.
  • Ability to work diplomatically and persuasively with community groups and elected officials.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
  • Knowledge of rezoning processes and zoning regulations is an asset.
