Job Summary

The Manitoba Government is seeking a highly qualified Caribou Biologist to join our team in the Wildlife branch. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing and delivering the provincial boreal woodland caribou program, developing range management unit plans, and delivering the Manitoba Boreal Woodland Caribou Recovery Strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and deliver the provincial boreal woodland caribou program, including developing range management unit plans and implementing conservation strategies.
  • Provide guidance and support on boreal woodland caribou issues, including working with indigenous communities, conservation organizations, and industry stakeholders.
  • Assist in establishing partnerships with key stakeholders to advance conservation efforts and promote sustainable land use practices.
  • Develop and implement effective conservation plans, including monitoring and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with other government agencies, NGOs, and industry partners to advance conservation goals and objectives.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in biological sciences, natural resource management, or related discipline.
  • Experience with caribou/ungulate ecology, management, capture, and population surveys.
  • Experience with land management and conservation planning.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in organizational and project management skills, including budget planning and financial reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including experience working with diverse groups and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and understanding of species-at-risk issues in Manitoba.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying provincial and federal natural resource management and species at risk legislation and policy.
  • Experience supervising staff and training or mentoring scientific and technical personnel.
  • Technical knowledge of geographic information systems, data analysis, and data management.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to travel to and work in remote locations for extended periods, using various modes of transportation, including chartered aircraft, boat, ATV, and snowmobile. The candidate must also be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which may require moderate physical effort conducting field work in adverse weather conditions.
