- Provide direct nursing care to patients, including scrubbing and circulating duties, in accordance with established standards and administrative policies.
- Coordinate and provide nursing care to patients, ensuring that orders from physicians and anaesthetists are followed and that care is delivered in a timely and efficient manner.
- Set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to appropriate staff, and participate in identifying and reducing risk factors that may impact patients and/or healthcare teams.
- Act as an advocate for patients, promoting their autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, and access to information.
- Modify care as needs change, initiating immediate treatment as required.
- Obtain, check, set up, and position supplies, instruments, and equipment required for surgery, ensuring that instruments and equipment are in working order.
- Report instruments/equipment in need of repair and follow standardized count policy.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and research, identifying patient care issues and collecting data.
- Participate as an active member on nursing and hospital committees and councils, contributing to the improvement of patient care and/or work environment.
- Participate in the orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff and students, providing information and acting as a preceptor and mentor as appropriate.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices and procedures.
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
- Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- One year's recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area, and completion of post-graduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
- Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions.
- Ability to determine and deal with emergency situations.
- Ability to recognize acuity changes.
- Ability to use factual information, prior learning, and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence/evidence-informed practice.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team using verbal, written, and electronic applications.
- Ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients and families/caregivers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and patient advocacy.
- Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem-solve effectively.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to collaborate with and promote cooperation among members of the interprofessional care team.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including relevant computer applications.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
