Role OverviewThe Registered Nurse at the Atlantic Canada Poison Centre plays a vital role in delivering expert advice and management for pharmacological and non-pharmacological exposures. This position involves collaborating with healthcare professionals and the public across the Atlantic region.
Key Responsibilities- Responding to and triaging incoming inquiries, while gathering detailed exposure histories.
- Assessing toxicity severity through critical thinking and utilizing toxicology references.
- Implementing care plans based on established protocols and clinical judgment.
- Communicating treatment recommendations to healthcare facilities and providers.
- Providing initial crisis intervention for callers experiencing medical emergencies.
- Assisting in the training and development of new staff and students.
- Engaging in research initiatives related to poisoning cases.
- Collaborating with colleagues to achieve the objectives of the Poison Centre.
Shifts are structured as follows: 11.25 hours, including day and night rotations, with schedules adhering to self-scheduling guidelines.
Qualifications- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BScN) is required; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse in Nova Scotia is mandatory.
- Certification as a Specialist in Poison Information (CSSPI) is preferred.
- Experience in emergency or critical care nursing is advantageous.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse populations.
- Proficient in managing cases of poisoning and overdose.
- Solid understanding of pharmacology and medication calculations.
- Familiarity with computer systems and technology is essential.
- Bilingual proficiency in French and English is preferred.
