Position Overview

The selected candidate will serve as a Senior Compositing Artist, engaging in the responsibilities outlined below, which may be adjusted by the studio as necessary.

In this role, you will undertake intricate digital image compositing tasks, skillfully merging all components of a visual effects sequence. Reporting to the Head of 2D, you will be accountable for producing the final deliverable shot work on our projects, adhering to the creative vision set forth by the VFX supervisor.

Your collaboration with fellow department members and the broader project team will be essential in integrating live-action footage with digitally created elements into a polished shot. This includes tasks such as 2D tracking, keying, color grading, 2D effects, and overall integration. You will also coordinate closely with other departments and production teams to ensure timely delivery and adherence to project milestones, while maintaining the artistic and technical excellence of your work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Compose a range of shots from simple to complex at various production stages, including pre-compositions, alignments, 2D tracking, 2D effects, overlay extractions, integration, and color grading.
  • Adhere to established style guidelines, striving for the highest quality in all outputs.
  • Identify and escalate issues to senior artists or supervisors as necessary.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team, seeking opportunities for joint efforts.
  • Organize, prioritize, and communicate effectively to meet production demands.
  • Engage in creative discussions and actively participate in review sessions.
  • Receive and implement feedback promptly and effectively.
  • Maintain flexibility and adaptability, capable of working within established workflows while also employing creativity and problem-solving skills to navigate challenges.

Expectations of the Role

  • Ensure uniformity in the final composition of visual effects elements.
  • Address visual, artistic, and technical challenges where feasible, or relay information to the relevant departments (modeling, texturing, 3D lighting, etc.).
  • Balance the creative and technical facets of each shot.
  • Merge 2D and 3D components to create photorealistic images that align with FOLKS' high standards.
  • Collaborate closely with Compositing Supervisors, VFX supervisors, and other team members to comprehend project requirements, provide creative insights, and devise solutions that enhance shots while ensuring the artistic vision is effectively realized.
  • Conduct quality control on shots prior to submission for review/approval, ensuring compliance with all technical and creative standards, and promptly implement any feedback received.
  • Keep the production and project team updated on work status, issues to be resolved, and recommend potential solutions.
  • Meet deadlines consistently, notifying the project team promptly of any anticipated delays.
  • Work collaboratively with other artists and departments to ensure cohesive visual storytelling and continuity across all elements.
  • Manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, and meet project deadlines while maintaining a high level of artistic quality and attention to detail.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with team members, supervisors, and clients, providing updates on progress, addressing concerns, and contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Mentor and guide junior compositors, sharing knowledge and techniques.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in creating high-end composites for episodic television and live-action feature films.
  • Proficient in Nuke with a solid understanding of the mathematics involved in compositing operations.
  • Familiarity with fundamental cinematography principles, including knowledge of color, lighting (reflection, refraction, shadows), perspective, and composition.
  • Awareness of other software used in the industry, such as Maya, Houdini, and standard tracking software.
  • Strong attention to detail and a solid understanding of color theory, color LUTs, composition, and the film medium.
  • Excellent organizational skills, maintaining professionalism in a delivery-focused environment.
  • Technical and creative problem-solving abilities with a proactive mindset.
  • Working knowledge of the VFX pipeline and the entire post-production process, including interdepartmental dependencies and handover procedures.
