Position Title: Animal Care Specialist - Casual
General Overview:
This role represents the entry-level position for technologists under direct supervision, tasked with executing laboratory animal care in accordance with established standards.
Key Responsibilities:
The following responsibilities outline the skill level and accountability required for this position. The incumbent must demonstrate flexibility to manage a diverse range of tasks effectively:
(a) Conducts animal management and health assessments; collects necessary samples for diagnostic evaluations such as blood, urine, and fecal matter;
(b) Administers treatments as directed under veterinary oversight and prepares health reports as necessary;
(c) Operates specialized containment apparatus including biological safety cabinets and autoclaves;
(d) Engages in routine health monitoring of laboratory animals, including fecal examinations and blood sampling;
(e) Implements disease control protocols as advised by veterinary or supervisory personnel;
(f) Utilizes personal protective equipment as required;
(g) May undertake responsibilities of a more senior Laboratory Animal Technician;
(h) Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Educational Background:
A university degree in a relevant field or certification as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician with the appropriate professional association, or completion of an accredited Veterinary Technology Diploma program.
Experience:
A minimum of one year of relevant experience is required.
Additional Requirements:
The candidate must be physically capable of fulfilling the job requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs. A clean history regarding animal-related allergies is essential. Willingness to engage in health and safety programs, including immunization protocols, is necessary. Effective communication skills in English (both verbal and written) are required. The ability to follow directions and work independently is essential. A valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license may be required. Availability to work weekends and holidays is expected.
