Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Urban Planner I to join our team at Kootenay Employment Services Society. As a key member of our planning department, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our community by assisting in the formulation, implementation, and improvement of master plans for physical development and land use planning services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and process land use applications and conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with municipal regulations.
  • Compose comprehensive staff and planning reports to inform decision-making and policy development.
  • Draft planning-related bylaws and policies to guide land use and development in our community.
  • Coordinate activities for the completion of projects requiring planning expertise, including stakeholder engagement and public outreach.
  • Prepare for and participate in public meetings and workshops regarding planning issues, providing expert advice and guidance.
  • Assist in the development, refinement, and evaluation of bylaws, policies, procedures, and public guides to various land use application procedures.
  • Conduct planning studies and public surveys, including data collection and analysis, to inform planning decisions.
  • Prepare and maintain technical records, including maps, reports, and other planning documents.
  • Respond to public inquiries and provide information on planning-related matters.
  • Perform duties of a general planning nature, including research, analysis, and problem-solving.
Requirements:
  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Land Use Planning or a related field.
  • Two to three years of employment experience in land use or development planning, preferably in a municipal setting.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other mapping and graphics software.
  • Membership eligibility in the Canadian Institute of Planners and Planning Institute of BC.
  • Class 5 Driver's License with a clean driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of land use planning legislation and regulations in British Columbia.
  • Excellent computer skills, including in-depth knowledge and experience working in an MS Office environment.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle confidential inquiries and information.
Competencies for Success:
  • Knowledge and/or experience with stakeholder engagement and community outreach.
  • Political acumen and understanding of municipal politics.
Working Conditions:
  • Computer-focused work for extended periods of time.
  • Working conditions with changing priorities, tight deadlines, and various conflicting demands.
