Position Overview
Durham College is on the lookout for a skilled and dedicated professional to join our academic team as a part-time professor in the School of Science, Engineering and Information Technology. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching Sample Management within the Chemical Laboratory Technician program.
Course Details
The course, Sample Management (CHEM 2203), spans one semester and covers both theoretical and practical elements of laboratory operations. Students will explore the intricate laboratory systems involved in the receipt, organization, prioritization, and communication of information. The curriculum emphasizes the journey of laboratory samples from collection through analysis to storage, highlighting the critical role of process control in maintaining quality management systems. The hands-on laboratory sessions will enhance students' skills in managing samples in accordance with industry standards.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a part-time professor at Durham College include, but are not limited to:
- Fostering an inclusive learning environment that respects students' diverse backgrounds and learning preferences;
- Applying adult education principles to actively engage students in their learning journey;
- Utilizing educational technologies to facilitate learning, manage grades, and deliver hybrid or online courses;
- Developing curriculum that incorporates effective assessment strategies for student learning;
- Ensuring course content remains current and relevant to industry standards;
- Demonstrating initiative and the ability to work independently;
- Collaborating effectively with students, program teams, and various stakeholders.
Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- A relevant degree, with industry credentials preferred (Master's degree is an asset).
- At least five years of recent and pertinent work experience.
- Experience in testing laboratories across various sectors, including environmental, food, or pharmaceutical industries.
- Teaching experience at the post-secondary level, with a solid understanding of Universal Design for Learning and contemporary assessment methodologies.
- Participation in industry-led or community-based applied research is a plus.
- Proficiency in utilizing current technologies to enhance student learning and manage grades.
- A commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, and community partners.
- Familiarity with the Ontario college system.
Preference will be given to candidates with relevant educational credentials and a proven history of applicable work and teaching experience. Candidates must hold the necessary accreditation or trade certification.
