The selected individual will play a pivotal role in steering the strategic vision and objectives of the Geochemistry Team. This role entails close collaboration with project managers, engineers, and geoscientists on extensive multidisciplinary initiatives as well as geochemistry-centric assignments. The ideal candidate will serve as a cornerstone for the geochemistry team at BGC, offering guidance, technical expertise, and mentorship as we enhance our practices and expand our geochemistry capabilities.

This role offers flexibility in location, with options available at various BGC offices across Canada and the United States.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical lead and/or reviewer for project scope design and interpretation concerning metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD), water quality, source term development, and predictive water quality modeling projects.
  • Collaborate with hydrogeology and hydrology teams on integrated water balance and water quality modeling projects.
  • Oversee project management tasks, including proposals, budgets, timelines, staffing, and scopes.
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Mentor, supervise, and train junior and intermediate staff in both field and office settings.
  • Engage in business development activities, identifying new opportunities and promoting BGC's capabilities in innovative hydrogeochemical projects.
  • Present findings to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Author or co-author technical reports.
  • Liaise with client and partner representatives.
  • Travel as necessary to remote sites in North and South America to support junior team members and familiarize with project locations.
  • Advocate for BGC's vision, values, and culture among staff.
Required Qualifications
  • A graduate degree in chemistry, geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional registration as P.Geo. or P.Eng. with EGBC or a similar regulatory body.
Required Experience
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in metal leaching and acid rock drainage assessments, water quality evaluations, and predictive water quality modeling projects.
  • Proven experience in various phases of environmental assessment and permitting, including bulk sampling, environmental applications, permitting, water quality modeling, and closure planning.
  • Expertise in designing monitoring programs and interpreting data from geochemical static and kinetic studies, from scoping to feasibility; from Environmental Assessment through permitting; and from operations to closure/remediation.
  • Familiarity with a range of geochemical and hydrological modeling tools, including PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench, HYDRUS, MODFLOW, and/or GoldSim.
  • Experience in utilizing water quality and geochemical data to develop water quality models, establish permit limits, and create operational monitoring plans.
Required Skills
  • Strong foundation in low-temperature geochemistry, water quality, and ML/ARD theory and practice.
  • Proficient in managing large datasets using database management software such as EQWIN or EQuIS, and Microsoft Access.
  • Excellent technical writing skills; capable of preparing, presenting, and reviewing reports.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong leadership and project management capabilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, comprehend their project objectives, and apply that understanding to project tasks.
  • Experience in mentoring or leading teams of junior and intermediate staff is essential.
  • Strong understanding of the Canadian provincial regulatory framework related to metal mining project submissions for Environmental Assessment and/or permitting is expected.
