Position Overview

Ontario Transit Group (OTG) is on the lookout for a proficient and committed Mechanic (410A) to contribute to our operations on the Ontario Line South initiative. As a vital member of Local 793, you will be instrumental in the upkeep and repair of heavy machinery and equipment utilized in tunnel construction and associated civil engineering tasks. This role demands substantial expertise with heavy equipment and a robust dedication to safety and operational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintenance & Repair: Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a diverse array of heavy machinery and equipment, including tunnel boring machines (TBMs), earthmoving machinery, cranes, and other construction vehicles.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Perform diagnostic evaluations to pinpoint mechanical problems, employing computerized tools and equipment to ensure accuracy in issue identification and resolution.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Formulate and implement preventative maintenance schedules to reduce equipment downtime and guarantee optimal performance of all machinery.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and regulations, ensuring that all maintenance and repair tasks are executed safely and efficiently. Engage in safety meetings and contribute to the formulation of safe work practices.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain comprehensive records of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts utilized, hours worked, and any encountered issues. Ensure that documentation is precise and current for regulatory compliance and operational tracking.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with fellow mechanics, equipment operators, and site supervisors to ensure machinery is operating effectively and to coordinate repair schedules without hindering construction progress.
  • Emergency Repairs: React swiftly to equipment failures, delivering prompt and effective repairs to minimize project delays. Be available for emergency repairs as dictated by the project timeline.
  • Equipment Upgrades: Assist in the installation and testing of new equipment or enhancements, ensuring that all machinery aligns with project specifications and operational standards.
Qualifications:
  • Certification: Must possess a valid 410A (Heavy Duty Equipment Technician) certification.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, ideally within the construction or tunneling sector.
  • Union Membership: Must be a member in good standing with Local 793.
  • Technical Skills: Expertise in diagnostic tools, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical repairs. Familiarity with TBMs and large-scale construction equipment is highly advantageous.
  • Safety Awareness: Comprehensive knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, with a commitment to maintaining a secure working environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication abilities, with the capacity to work effectively in a team setting and coordinate with other trades and site management.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be physically capable of managing the demands of the role, including lifting heavy components, working in confined spaces, and performing repairs in various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends, as required by the project schedule.
