About the Role:

The University of Toronto is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the position of Assistant Curator, Indigenous Art. This is a unique opportunity to work with the Doris McCarthy Gallery and the Department of Sociology to create, promote, and facilitate gallery and classroom programming that is informed by Indigenous ways of knowing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement educational workshops and seminars that promote Indigenous art and culture.
  • Provide guidance on best practices and strategies for effective course design, with a focus on Indigenous knowledge translation and anti-colonial approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Create and edit support documentation, including resources and materials for instructors and students.
  • Liaise with internal and external service providers to ensure effective collaboration and communication.
  • Develop and deliver presentations to promote programs, opportunities, and initiatives related to Indigenous art and culture.
  • Curate exhibitions and gallery installations that showcase Indigenous art and culture.
  • Track and monitor outreach activities associated with gallery programming.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years recent and related experience with Indigenous contemporary art and culture, including instructional/curriculum design and/or developing resources to promote Indigenous knowledge translation or anti-colonial approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the art industry, including Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Foundation.
  • Experience working within diverse Indigenous communities with knowledge of Indigenous worldviews and values.
  • Must be knowledgeable of cultural protocols to appropriately engage and foster respectful, reciprocal, ongoing relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous communities.
  • The incumbent must have a passion for supporting instructors of diverse backgrounds across the humanities, social science, and science disciplines; sensitivity to the professional development challenges and support needs of educators at all career stages and all levels of experience in working with anti-colonial practices.
  • Must demonstrate strong personal initiative; tact and good judgment, and the ability to successfully meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with excellent facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Strong consultative decision-making skills; strong organizational skills; proven project management skills; and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have strong computer skills, including a high degree of functionality in the use of all Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Technical certifications in Adobe and Microsoft considered an asset.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous.
