Mainframe Developer – Role Overview

  • Accountable for comprehensive technical design, development, and upkeep of applications on mainframe systems.
  • Design and implement programs; generate test transactions and execute testing procedures.
  • Analyze requirements and objectives for the creation and deployment of application systems.
  • Review, assess, and modify programming systems, including coding, testing, debugging, and installation. Develop disaster recovery strategies.
  • Maintain both online and batch applications.
  • A position is available for a senior developer to engage in the delivery and development of this initiative and to contribute to future enhancements, support, and maintenance after delivery.
  • Primary responsibilities include crafting detailed design specifications, reviewing code, and evaluating impacts on other applications.
  • Collaborate closely with team members to ensure uniformity in coding standards and practices, while optimizing synergy and reuse opportunities.
  • Lead the technical facets of projects from inception to deployment.
  • Engage in analysis and system design specification discussions.
  • Document design alternatives and solutions in accordance with System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies.
  • Ensure that solutions comply with development best practices and architectural guidelines.
  • Utilize analytical skills to address challenges and deliver effective solutions.
  • Proactively identify potential obstacles and implement strategies to mitigate issues.
  • Actively participate in resolving issues.
  • Provide detailed development estimates to the Project Manager regarding development efforts, along with weekly status updates and budget forecasts.
  • Oversee configuration management for sub-projects within the release. Responsible for coding, testing, packaging, deployment, and support of builds as code transitions through development, system, acceptance, and production environments.
  • May lead code review sessions. Collaborate with the System Test Environment Management Team (STEMT) to ensure environments are operational and builds are deployed correctly.
  • Contribute to the development of testing strategies, plans, test cases, and testing activities (including unit and integration testing of code).
  • Offer technical support to business and testing teams during testing phases.
  • Monitor defects, conduct defect triage, and facilitate resolution.
  • Prepare data setups and ensure environment readiness.
  • Mentor junior developers and facilitate knowledge transfer within the team.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation is stored in the project repository and that knowledge transfer occurs to full-time staff upon completion of the contract.

Mainframe Developer – Required Skills

  • Proficient in mainframe MVS, COBOL, JCL Utilities, CICS, and databases such as DB2 or IMS.

Mainframe Developer – Preferred Skills

  • Experience in a similar domain is advantageous.
  • Background in the banking industry.
  • Familiarity with SAS, REXX, or CLIST, and TRMA integration with distributed technologies.
