Job Summary

The National Research Council Canada is seeking a skilled Plumber/Steamfitter to join our team as a Maintenance and Repair Specialist. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our research facilities by performing routine maintenance, repairs, and installations of plumbing, steam, and heating systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing, steam, condensate, heating, and ventilation systems, including steam traps, expansion joints, PRV's, converters, heat exchangers, condensate receivers, and pumps.
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and alterations of steam, condensate, compressed gases, chilled water, and specialty mechanical distribution systems.
  • Conduct daily facility walkthroughs for inspection and condition monitoring of equipment and all building systems.
  • Work with subcontractors and vendors on equipment repair and preventive maintenance programs as required.
  • Maintain all work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Comply with and apply all OHSE and other federal, provincial, and municipal laws, codes, and regulations.
Requirements
  • Secondary School Diploma according to provincial standards.
  • Licensed Steamfitter 307A or an equivalent inter-provincial Red Seal Journeymen's Certificate of Qualification.
  • Significant experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plumbing, steam, condensate, heating, and ventilation systems.
  • Basic experience providing estimates for materials and repair work of pipe systems.
  • Significant experience conducting daily facility walkthroughs for inspection and condition monitoring of equipment and all building systems.
  • Basic experience working with subcontractors and vendors on equipment repair and preventive maintenance programs as required.
  • Experience maintaining all work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Basic experience complying with and applying all OHSE and other federal, provincial, and municipal laws, codes, and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Industrial experience.
  • Electrical experience.
  • Fabrication experience.
  • MS Office suite experience.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if requested. They must also work on-call on rotation and be able to respond and be on site within the space of an hour.

English.

Assessment Criteria
  • Solid working knowledge of servicing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plumbing, heating, and cooling distribution systems and equipment.
  • Solid working knowledge of performing maintenance, repairs, and alterations of steam, condensate, compressed gases, chilled water, and specialty mechanical distribution systems.
  • Solid knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Solid understanding of tools, equipment, principles, materials, and terminology associated with the steam fitting/plumbing trade.
  • Solid knowledge in the current versions of all applicable legislation, building regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Solid ability to interpret and work from electronic/written operation instruction sheets as well as mechanical, electrical, and geographical drawings/maps and produce quick-sketch working diagrams.
  • Solid ability to identify options, develop solutions, and take action when responding to customer requests.
