Position Overview:
The University of Toronto is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Adjunct Instructor to teach a course focused on the rich culture of ancient Egypt. This role involves engaging students through the exploration of various textual materials that reflect the daily lives and beliefs of ancient Egyptians.
Course Content:
The curriculum will cover a comprehensive introduction to the Ancient Egyptian language and writing system, alongside readings from a diverse array of texts, including:
- Domestic and religious texts
- Historical documents
- Scientific writings
Students will gain insights into Egyptian funerary practices through texts discovered in tombs, such as autobiographies and offering formulae, as well as the significance of monumental inscriptions related to the pharaoh's role in society.
Class Details:
Estimated Enrollment: 50 students
Estimated TA Support: 140 hours
Class Schedule: Mondays from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Class Format: In-person sessions
Appointment Duration:
This position is for the academic term spanning from September to December.
Compensation:
Salary varies based on qualifications and experience, with potential earnings for different ranks outlined as follows:
- Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
- Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $9,930.79
- Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
- Sessional Lecturer II, Long Term: $10,326.62
- Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76
- Sessional Lecturer III, Long Term: $10,570.02
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations or a related field, along with demonstrable expertise in the subject matter.
Responsibilities:
The selected instructor will be responsible for:
- Preparing and delivering engaging course content
- Developing, administering, and grading assignments, tests, and exams
- Holding regular office hours for student support
- Calculating and submitting final grades
- Performing other teaching-related duties as necessary
Application Process:
This position is governed by the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement. Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or III.
