Position Overview

The Wildlife Conservation Specialist is a key role within the Government of Northwest Territories, focusing on the management and research of ungulate populations.

Reporting Structure

This position is based in Yellowknife, NWT, and reports directly to the Manager of Wildlife Research and Management within the Wildlife and Fish Division.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The incumbent will oversee the Biologist specializing in Ungulate Studies, along with managing contract, term, and casual personnel as necessary.

Financial Management

The role includes the responsibility for an annual budget of approximately $50,000, with expectations to cultivate partnerships that could yield additional funding opportunities of up to $500,000 to support collaborative initiatives.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with diverse stakeholder groups, including industry representatives, academic institutions, governmental agencies, Indigenous communities, and other resource users.
  • Ability to operate autonomously and effectively in a collaborative environment, both within the department and with external partners.
  • Strong analytical and research capabilities.
  • In-depth understanding of conservation biology, wildlife population dynamics, and management challenges, including field sampling, aerial surveys, statistical methodologies, and relevant software applications.
  • Field expertise in animal behavior, humane handling practices, and general post-mortem examination techniques.

Qualifications

Typically, the qualifications for this position would be achieved through the completion of a Master of Science degree in a relevant natural science discipline, such as biology, wildlife biology, ecology, wildlife management, environmental studies, environmental science, or resource management. Additionally, a minimum of five (5) years of pertinent experience is required, encompassing the design of field research, data management and analysis, public engagement, and the publication of peer-reviewed research.
