Medical Laboratory Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS). As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team in providing high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:- Receive and process patient samples, ensuring accurate and timely testing.
- Perform routine laboratory tests, such as urine tests for protein and glucose, using colour-coded dip sticks.
- Prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifugation and separation of serum or plasma from cells.
- Log data into a computerized database and batch specimens for distribution to applicable areas.
- Store analyzed specimens and discard outdated specimens according to established facility procedures.
- Arrange for the shipment of specimens to referral laboratories, completing forms and packaging specimens safely.
- Perform routine electrocardiogram testing, explaining procedures to patients and operating electrocardiographs according to established procedures.
- Answer telephones, take and relay messages, and respond to general enquiries from patients, nursing wards, or external facilities.
- Key data into computerized databases and print off various reports, labels, and blood collection lists as required.
- Maintain work areas, including cleaning blood collection baskets and wiping down counters with disinfectant.
- Grade 12 and successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to type 25 wpm and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively and physically carry out the duties of the position.
