Job Overview

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Technician is essential in underground construction projects, ensuring the effective and seamless functioning of the TBM throughout operational shifts. This role involves close collaboration with the TBM Shift Manager, following established safety protocols and maintaining open lines of communication during the work process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate the TBM in accordance with current Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) as well as TBM operational guidelines.
  • Oversee the sequence of ring supply to ensure accurate construction and alignment of the tunnel lining, while considering the constructability and positioning of the ring to avoid conflicts with the tail shield.
  • Monitor tunnel alignment and halt operations if any issues arise or if there are uncertainties regarding the functionality of any related devices.
  • Record critical information, such as ring orientation, damage assessments, and plane checks, in the TBM database.
  • Document geological characteristics of the excavated materials and work in conjunction with the Tunnel Mechanical Engineer on tool modifications during maintenance interventions.
  • Communicate effectively with the TBM crew and relay necessary information as required.
  • As the primary operator in the TBM cabin, communicate with surface teams and adhere to emergency protocols.
Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience in operating TBMs within tunneling or underground construction settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under supervision, following directives, and maintaining effective communication.
  • Strong grasp of RAMS principles and their relevance to tunneling operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of TBM operational procedures and compliance with current instructions.
  • Experience in managing ring supply and ensuring correct alignment during construction activities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and proficiency in data recording.
  • Capability to identify geological features and collaborate with engineering teams.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Dedication to ongoing learning and professional growth in TBM operations.
