Position Overview
Your focus is on compliance and ensuring that all efforts are directed towards meeting environmental objectives. You excel under pressure, delivering on goals and adhering to deadlines while maintaining attention to detail and managing a complex portfolio of projects. Your collaborative nature allows you to engage stakeholders early to ensure that compliance requirements are recognized and addressed promptly.
In this position, you will assist our organization and various project teams in managing environmental risks, ensuring adherence to environmental legislation, corporate policies, and industry best practices. You will also supervise environmental consultants engaged to help mitigate environmental risks and liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies.
In your first year, you will:
- Gain insight into utility operations and the company's Environmental Management System (EMS), corporate policies, and procedures.
- Provide regulatory support to internal business units in managing hazardous wastes, dangerous goods, and contaminated sites.
- Oversee the activities of environmental consultants to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements without disrupting project timelines.
- Evaluate proposals, cost estimates, scopes of work, and environmental investigation reports, offering recommendations to stakeholder groups.
- Establish strong relationships with internal business units and external regulatory bodies.
In your second year, you will:
- Assist in updating relevant internal standards and guidance documents to standardize processes for managing environmental compliance.
- Deliver presentations to various internal stakeholders to enhance awareness of environmental compliance.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with all relevant internal and external stakeholders.
What it takes:
- A diploma or bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as environmental or chemical engineering, environmental science, natural resource management, environmental planning, hydrogeology, or biology.
- Four to seven years of experience managing environmental issues related to waste management (both hazardous and non-hazardous), dangerous goods, or contaminated sites, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, preferably within the energy sector.
- Field experience with all aspects of the Hazardous Waste Regulation, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations, and/or Contaminated Sites Regulation.
- Proven strategic decision-making skills with technical expertise to navigate complex project challenges.
- Familiarity with federal and provincial environmental legislation, regulations, and bylaws as they pertain to the energy industry.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to participate in a flexible work program, allowing you to work from an approved remote location in British Columbia for up to 85 days a year, subject to business needs.
Our dynamic workplace offers a variety of challenging opportunities while prioritizing safety, inclusivity, and diversity. We provide a competitive salary and benefits package, supporting lifelong career development. We also encourage community involvement and the spirit of giving back.
