POSITION OVERVIEW
The Social Centre serves as a vital hub for individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges, offering a supportive environment where they can engage in wellness activities, enhance their mental and physical health, and foster community connections. This space is designed for social interaction, support, and participation in recreational and vocational programs. Community Support Workers will engage with participants, facilitate workshops, and lead group activities tailored to meet their activation, life skills, recreational, and social needs. They will collaborate with healthcare professionals to provide integrated support to clients utilizing the centre's services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Foster positive relationships with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use issues, homelessness, and other marginalized groups through a trauma-informed and harm reduction framework.
- Build trust, offer support, and advocate for a diverse clientele, including those actively using substances and facing significant health challenges.
- Design and implement engaging activities that cater to the needs of participants, providing guidance and demonstrations as necessary.
- Collaborate with coordinators to develop new activities and encourage participant involvement.
- Monitor participant interactions and report any unsafe conditions or behavioral changes to supervisors.
- Utilize sound judgment and creativity to navigate unpredictable situations and emergencies.
- Employ non-violent communication and de-escalation techniques to manage volatile behaviors, addressing participant feedback and concerns appropriately.
- Provide guidance to Activity Assistants and Peer Support Workers as needed.
- Oversee meal preparation for weekly Social Centre dinners, including heating prepared foods and preparing beverages and snacks.
- Set up and maintain equipment and materials for activities, ensuring proper inventory management. Accompany and supervise participants during outings and physical activities.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation, including statistics, progress reports, and participant profiles.
- Work ethically and professionally within a team, ensuring confidentiality and a focus on participant needs.
- Refer participants to additional programs and services, providing information on available resources.
- Perform housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education, Training, and Experience
- Completion of a Social Services Diploma, Activity Assistant Program, or related field.
- Class V BC Driver's License.
- Current certifications in CPR and First Aid.
- Naloxone Training.
- Valid Criminal Record Check for working with Vulnerable Populations.
- Full COVID-19 Vaccination.
- Ability to perform the physical, mental, and emotional duties of the position.
- Minimum one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of current social issues related to homelessness, mental health, and substance misuse.
- Knowledge of harm reduction and psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
- Ability to engage in various arts, crafts, and sports activities.
- Familiarity with community resources.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to interact with individuals of diverse ages, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
- Physical capability to fulfill job responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in operating relevant equipment.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
