Position Overview
BC Wheelchair Sports Association is in search of a full-time individual to oversee Wheelchair Rugby operations, which includes athlete management, coaching and officiating development, and tournament organization. Additional responsibilities encompass the 'Bridging the Gap' (BTG) recruitment and retention initiative, special events, community collaborations, and other relevant programs and services. The successful applicant will report directly to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Wheelchair Rugby Program Management: Collaborate closely with coaches, athletes, officials, clubs, and partner organizations to design and implement wheelchair rugby programming, including annual planning, new program development, training camps, clinics, competitions, provincial team initiatives, equipment management, and sport science and medicine.
- Event Coordination: Lead the planning and execution of major tournaments such as the Vancouver Invitational and Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournaments, overseeing all aspects including technical sports requirements, registration, venue management, organizing committees, volunteer coordination, team communications, officiating, catering, transportation, accommodations, ceremonies, medical services, promotions, awards, and data management.
- Support for Additional Events: Assist in the organization of other BCWSA and partner events, including the Invictus Games and the Vancouver International Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.
- Bridging the Gap Program: Strategize and execute sport-specific program delivery, focusing on athlete recruitment, introductory programs, Have a Go Days, peer mentorship, equipment provision, community partnerships, and awareness initiatives.
- Partner Engagement: Collaborate with local, provincial, and national partners to ensure effective communication and alignment of programs, including Wheelchair Rugby Clubs, BC Wheelchair Rugby Association, and Wheelchair Rugby Canada. Work closely with performance partners such as viaSport and the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific.
- Strategic Planning and Budgeting: Partner with Program Staff and the Executive Director to create strategic and operational plans, manage budgets, and ensure precise tracking of all reporting data and information.
- Wheelchair Loan Program: Assist in the administration of the BCWSA Wheelchair Loan Program, particularly in relation to wheelchair rugby.
Qualifications & Experience
- A degree in Kinesiology, Sport Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience in sport programming and athlete and coach development.
- Experience in budget development and reporting.
- Proven event management and hosting experience.
- Familiarity with the BC or Canadian sport system.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain effective professional relationships.
- Capacity to work efficiently and independently while managing multiple tasks.
- Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and willingness to travel as required.
- Completion of the BCWSA Screening Process, including a Criminal Record Check.
- A Class 5 driver's license is mandatory; a Class 4 driver's license (or the ability to apply for one) is advantageous.
- Experience working with individuals with physical disabilities is a plus.
- Knowledge of sports wheelchairs or bicycle mechanics is beneficial.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid work environment; must reside in the region and be willing to commute to the office on a weekly basis.
- Full-time position (37.5 hours/week); must be available for flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Physical demands of the role include loading and unloading adaptive sport equipment for programming and events.
