Position Overview

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa is seeking a qualified Geriatric Medicine Specialist to join its esteemed Division of Geriatric Medicine.

About the Division

The Division of Geriatric Medicine is distinguished for its exceptional patient care and is recognized globally for its innovative programs, including the development of the Geriatrics 5Ms: Mind, Mobility, Medications, Multi-complexity & Matters Most. This framework effectively illustrates the vital role of Geriatricians. Our team comprises a dynamic group of 10 full-time academic professionals dedicated to advancing the field within a progressive medical department.

Institutional Excellence

The Ottawa Hospital is a leading tertiary-care facility with 1150 beds, catering to a diverse patient population across Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The hospital handles approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions and over one million outpatient visits annually, underscoring its significant role in the healthcare landscape.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) serves as the research hub, ranking fourth among over 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. With a robust team of over 2,200 researchers, OHRI publishes more than 2,000 studies each year, contributing to high-impact research outcomes.

Role Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in clinical practice, provide education and mentorship to medical students and residents, and have opportunities to contribute to research initiatives. Clinical responsibilities will encompass:

  • Managing an acute care inpatient Geriatric Medicine Unit
  • Participating in consultation teams across multiple campuses
  • Leading specialized outpatient clinics
  • Engaging in community-based assessments through rural clinics and Geriatric Assessment and Outreach teams

Additionally, the candidate will have the chance to work in a bilingual environment, offering services in both English and French.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a board-certified specialist in Geriatric Medicine, eligible for licensure in Ontario, and a member or eligible member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association. Candidates should also be eligible for certification in Geriatric Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa will be available, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Compensation and Benefits

The remuneration for this position will derive from various sources, including clinical billings, salary support, and honorariums. Comprehensive health and welfare benefits, including extended health, dental, and disability insurance, will be provided to full-time physicians.
