Job Title: Shop Manager

Job Summary:

The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing maintenance operations and equipment on all projects, ensuring the equipment is maintained to the highest standards. This role requires a strong leader who can manage a team of maintenance staff and foster a collaborative climate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the maintenance hub and spoke sites across the country, ensuring adherence to business plans and budgets.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance and repair of equipment at all sites, managing fleet maintenance activities.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors, planners, and parts personnel to optimize maintenance hub activity.
  • Make recommendations for changes in staffing, interview applicants, and assess training needs.
  • Ensure adherence to laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines affecting areas of responsibility.
  • Actively support the management team in maintaining safety programs and safety attest.
  • Responsible for the safety compliance of the repair and maintenance team.
  • Provide leadership to maintenance staff and foster a collaborative climate.
  • Manage the coordination of company-owned vehicles and equipment, as well as third-party rentals.
  • Monitor developing trends and innovation regarding equipment and rolling stock maintenance activities.
  • Assist in forecasting replacements for HD vehicles and HD equipment.
  • Accurately and timely code all invoices and timesheets.
  • Properly and efficiently track and process new machine warranty.
  • Capable of managing the company's lubricant analysis program.
  • Assist in spec'ing of new equipment.
  • Assist in spec'ing of new equipment warranty packages.
  • Communicate with clients, support staff, and management to ensure optimum everyday problem-solving.
  • Support senior staff in developing strategic HR initiatives.
  • Assist management in coordinating fleet utilization and disposals.
  • Manage meter reading and Vision Link compliance, ensuring timely and accurate service, preventive maintenance, and repair schedules.
  • Possible assistance with KPI (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Accurately track all vehicles and equipment for internal billing and job costing purposes.
  • Mentor mechanical staff and apprentices.
  • Prepare and approve requisitions for parts and supplies, and develop and implement inventory controls to minimize waste and loss.
  • Supervise maintenance staff and facilities in the Calgary location, and may act for the Fleet Manager in their absence.
  • Minimal travel to various locations as required.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of management experience in the heavy equipment industry with shop exposure and field repair capabilities.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various types of heavy equipment and other power-driven equipment and tools.
  • Skilled in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet objectives/deliverables.
  • Ability to mentor and lead a team of trades personnel.
  • Results-oriented team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to handle change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to stand, climb, bend, and lift to 50lbs for extended periods.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, environment, and customer service.
  • Valid safety tickets: H2S, Confined Space, Forklift, First aid, WHIMIS, TDG, and PST.
  • Commitment to working as part of a team and making safe choices.
