Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a Human Resources Labour Relations Advisor
This position entails providing human resource and labour relations expertise, guidance, and support within a vibrant healthcare setting. The role emphasizes a consultative and problem-solving approach to labour relations, collaborating with Operations Leaders, Union representatives, and staff to ensure consistent application of collective agreements, relevant legislation, and organizational policies. Working alongside other People teams, the advisor will cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with Operations Leaders, influencing decision-making through informed advice and strategic insights. The role also involves offering guidance on innovative workforce optimization strategies while staying updated on pertinent legislation and human resource practices relevant to Vancouver Coastal Health.
Key Responsibilities of the Human Resources Labour Relations Advisor include:
Providing consultation to managers and directors on operational challenges, assisting them in achieving strategic objectives and effective human resource management. Advising on performance management, disciplinary actions, leave management, recruitment, organizational restructuring, and employee relations. Leveraging in-depth knowledge of collective agreements, employment legislation, and organizational policies to offer consultative support on daily operational decisions with human resource implications. Investigating labour relations concerns and grievances; researching relevant case law and industry standards; developing and implementing policies and procedures to enhance consistent labour relations practices. Managing employee grievances from initiation to resolution, providing guidance on fact-finding, drafting correspondence, strategizing employer positions, and preparing for meetings with employees and union representatives. Fostering positive union-management relations through respectful communication and interest-based problem-solving; collaborating with Local Union executives to address workplace issues. In partnership with leadership, evaluating current business delivery and workforce optimization models, identifying opportunities for innovative strategies. Monitoring key metrics such as vacancies, sick leave, and workplace conflict to support operational planning. Maintaining records related to grievances and labour relations activities, analyzing data, and reporting findings to leadership. Staying informed on human rights, employment legislation, and collective agreements to ensure compliance with VCH's human resource programs. Participating in industry forums to remain aware of trends and changes in labour relations, communicating relevant information to the organization. Assisting in contingency planning for potential work stoppages and essential service planning for assigned departments.Qualifications
Education & Experience
A university degree in a relevant field or a Human Resources certificate from an accredited institution. A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in a unionized environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Membership with the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of British Columbia & Yukon (CPHR BC & YK) is considered an asset.Knowledge & Skills
