Job Title: Full Time Residential Counsellor

At The Salvation Army, we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Full Time Residential Counsellor to join our team. As a Residential Counsellor, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges in our residential settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide personalized support to residents, promoting their personal development and independence.
  • Advocate on behalf of residents, facilitating self-advocacy and collaboration with healthcare professionals.
  • Complete documentation and maintain accurate records.
  • Administer medications as required.
  • Develop and implement learning opportunities using agency and community resources.
  • Supervise and assist residents with daily tasks, including meal preparation and clean-up.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment, adhering to health and safety protocols.
  • Provide orientation and support to colleagues, students, volunteers, and family members.
  • Embody the agency's mission and philosophy, promoting a culture of respect and inclusivity.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, and waste.
  • Noisy environments.
  • Dealing with challenging behaviors and emotions.
  • Handling garbage and odors.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics.
Qualifications and Education:
  • Completed Developmental Services Worker Diploma or related degree/diploma.
  • Valid and current Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Level C Certificate.
  • Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate.
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Minimum 6-12 months' experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.
  • Experience with implementing Individual Support Plans.
  • Medication administration experience preferred.
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Strong counselling and de-escalation support skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose.
