Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager – Nutrition & Food Services or designated personnel, the Culinary Specialist I is tasked with overseeing and executing the daily preparation, cooking, and serving of safe, high-quality, and nutritious meals for clients, including patients, residents, staff, and visitors. This role adheres to established standards, departmental policies, and relevant regulations.

The incumbent is expected to demonstrate initiative and independent judgment in prioritizing tasks, selecting appropriate work methods, and addressing any unusual situations that may arise. The position aligns with the mission, vision, and values of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook meals in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Maintain an organized and efficient work environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and communicate with healthcare professionals.
  • Manage food inventory and assist in cash management as required.
  • Promote safety practices and adhere to workplace safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Certification from an accredited Cook Training Program.
  • Current Food Handler Training Certificate Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and email applications.
  • Understanding of therapeutic and modified food textures.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in healthcare food service or institutional cooking.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Capability to lift and handle various weights as per job requirements.
  • Respect for confidentiality and cultural diversity.
