About the Role
The University of Calgary invites applications for a Bioinformatics Developer position in the Faculty of Science. This full-time fixed-term position is for approximately 8 months, with the possibility of extension.
The successful candidate will work on multiple bioinformatics projects with competing priorities, performing duties in a professional and courteous manner. Tasks will vary in complexity, and the position requires minimal physical activity.
The position reports to the Program Manager and operates with some direction to implement solutions. The successful candidate will work 35 hours per week during normal business hours, with flexibility to address research group needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate or obtain bioinformatics data files from various sources, including the Internet, and store them on electronic media and databases, as directed by the PI.
- Follow research protocols and use software tools, including BLAST, DEseq 2, Bowtie 2, RSEM, and R, to analyze data and record results.
- Contribute to making data available to users through a Java web application, involving detecting and debugging display issues, data cleansing in the database, and verifying corrective measures.
- Contribute to research activities through data analysis, visualizing, and presenting analyzed data to staff members, and writing portions of reports and papers as needed.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in a similar position.
- BSc, MSc, or PhD in biological sciences, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.
- Good knowledge of bioinformatics file formats and conversions.
- Good knowledge of scripting languages, such as Perl and Python.
- Good knowledge of SQL and database operations.
- Experience with Postgres is preferred.
- Good knowledge of Linux at the command line level.
- Experience with Java EE and programming environments, such as Eclipse, is preferred.
- Familiarity with tools, such as BLAST, DEseq 2, Bowtie 2, RSEM, and R.
- Able to collaborate and communicate effectively with team members.
- Self-motivated, with a positive attitude.
- Willing to take on new challenges and put in extra effort to get the job done.
- Organized and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
