**Description**
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
The Bioinformatics specialist to work on genomics of rate disease using model organism and human genomics approaches.
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Laboratory Organization
- Works closely with and reports directly to the Principal Investigator
- Also works closely with post-doctoral scientists in both a wet and dry labs
- Maintains existing databases
- Tests new tools and improves performance efficiency by optimizing software
- Improves existing pipelines
Laboratory Administration
- Maintains programming lab notes, documentation and procedures
- Updates lab protocols
- Supports trainees in research work
Research
- Works closely with the PI
- Reports results to PI
- Processes and analyzes experimental samples
- Assists lab members with experiments
- Maintains existing genome databases
- Improves existing bioinformatics workflows
- Develops new bioinformatics workflows
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- An undergraduate degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or another relevant discipline
- MSc/PhD is considered an asset
- Minimum two years of experience in bioinformatics, preferably working with genomics/phenomics data
- Extensive knowledge of genomics and genetics
- Superb knowledge of Unix, Linux, R, Python, Java or C/C++ and/or related programming languages (e.g. Perl)
- Experience with SQL/MongoDB database systems is considered an asset
- Experience working in multi-team environment and implementation of bioinformatics workflow designs
- Experience with Cluster Computing
- Experience working with animal model databases (genome/phenome data) as well as human genome sequencing data
- Experience in molecular genetics will be considered an asset
- Creativity, initiative and good judgment for multi-tasking in a deadline-oriented environment
- Effective oral and written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
